Year 10 Home Learning - Music Video Coursework Summer 1

During May you will be expected to spend at least an hour each week to produce the research and planning for your music video production.

The research and planning is worth 30 marks.

Complete the work on Powerpoint or Word - remember your work needs to be landscape.

Week 1: 3 x Music Video Analysis analyses

Part 1: Type up your notes on Goodwin.  (click here if you need reminding)

Part 2: Analyse these 3 music videos

  • State the artist's name and the song name.

  • Identify which music video genre the video is.

  • Apply understanding of Goodwin’s theory - how does the videos follow the theory.  Include screenshots (about 8) for each of the videos you analyse to show key moments which link to his theory.

Week 2: Questionnaire, analysis and reflection

Part 1: Create a questionnaire to ask your identified target audience about what they would like to see in a music video to encourage them to watch it.  Even if you do not know which song you'll use, you should, by now, have some ideao of what music genre you will use and possibly even some preference for which music video genre.

You may want to ask questions about:

Age/gender/favourite music video genre/preferred element of Goodwin's theory/whether they like to see lots of close ups of the artist/colours/performance element - instruments or lip-sync/links to lyrics/types of costumes or settings etc.

Part 2: Get 10 people to respond to your questionnaire.  Analyse the feedback (statistics/graphs) and reflect on what is important to the target audience.

Week 4: Storyboard

Storyboard your ideas.  Use your annotated lyrics to help and design a minimum of 16 scenes.

Make sure you include:

  •  Timings (depending on the tempo of the song - you should aim to change the scene within 4 seconds - use your judgement if it is slow song or section)

  • Camera shots/angles and movement

  • Description - how does it link to Goodwin or Archer

Week 3: Artist research and Lyric annotation

Your target audience feedback should have influenced you to decide on the artist and song to use for your music video.  With that knowledge you now need to:

Part A:

Write a brief paragraph about your chosen artist

  • What kind of music do they make?

  • What kind of videos do they produce? Provide examples.

  • Who are their fans? Age/Gender? Why?

  • Where are you likely to see/hear them publicised? i.e. Q Magazine/Radio, Kerrang, Sugar Magazine, Heart radio, BBC Radio 1 etc

Part B:

Annotate your song lyrics (See example here if you're unclear).

  • Considrer Goodwin and Archer's theory - where can you include links to lyrics/thoughtbeats/close ups of the artist?

  • What about all your camera distances/angles/movements?

  • Mise-en-scene - location.settings/costumes props etc

Week 5: Cover page

Create a cover page which contains:

  • Title: B324 Portfolio - Music Video

  • Candidate name
