Unit B321 - Individual Portfolio

To produce two teen drama posters which follow the codes and conventions of existing posters

The purpose of this unit is to assess the:

  • candidate's knowledge and understanding of media products and contexts (AO1)

  • candidate's understanding of how meanings are created through analysis of media products, using media key concepts and appropriate terminology (AO2).

 

The accompanying production exercise requires candidates to:

• demonstrate an ability to research, plan and construct media products using appropriate presentation skills (AO3)

• demonstrate an ability to construct and evaluate their own products using creative and technical skills (AO4).

 

Brief Summary

This is a controlled assessment unit, worth 30% of your GCSE marks, which focuses on comparative analysis using the key concepts of Media Language and Representation.  It offers you the opportunity to demonstrate your skills in planning, construction and evaluation through the production exercise. We study teen drama films.

 requires you to:

* Write a 800-1500 word essay comparing how gender is represented in two music videos (60 marks)

* Create two posters advertising a teen drama film, lin to the essay (40 marks)

* Write a 550 – 750 word evaluation of the planning process together with evidence of your planning (20 marks)

The Essay (or ‘Critical Investigation’) - (60 marks)

 

You will write a 800-1500 word essay comparing how teenagers are represented in two teen drama films. This unit will focus on media language and representation. You will need to analyse the text’s use of:

 

  • narrative,

  • visual codes

  • technical codes,

 

And explore issues such as:

  • stereotyping,

  • effects on  the audience.

  • messages being created.

Production - Teen Drama Promotion (40 marks)

 

You will produce 1 film poster and 1DVD cover OR 2 film posters which promote your own teen drama film.

 

Using your knowledge of the genre you will demonstrate undertanding of the codes and conventions of the genre and apply these when producing professional looking posters using your own photographs and editing them on Photoshop.

 

You will need to demonstrate your ability to represent teenage stereotypes through the use of mise-en-scene and then use these to hint at the narrative of the film.

 

 

Research, Planning and Evaluation (20 marks)
 

You will need to maintain a portfolio of all the research that you undertake in order to help you prepare and plan your own posters.

Research will involve:

  • conducting primary research by identifying your target audience by questionnaires to find out what you need to include in your posters to appeal to the correct audience.

  • researching and annoting existing teen drama film posters to identify the generic conventions.

  • identifying a wide range of stereotypes in teen drama films and explain how they have been constructed and the effect they have on the audience.

Planning will involve:

  • creating your own narrative for your teen drama film.

  • responding to audience feedback when drafting your posters. 

Evaluation will include:

  • a 550-750 word dommentary on the process of preparing your posters and the overall success of your final product in comparison to the existing products you researched.  Audience feedback will be needed and incoporated into your write up.
